Analyzing Technical Elements of Film
From Marvel Studios
I chose to talk about the kinds of angles, movements, and sounds of Avengers: Infinity War. I like both action and superhero movies, which this movie fits as both. I also seen the previous marvel movies that apply to the timeline. As it being an action movie, there will be many camera movements.
The movie opens with an establishing shot of two ships in space, with one attacking the other. This shot introduces the viewer to the setting of the first scene. One can clearly see that one ship is bigger than the other, showing that there is superiority in the attack. It creates a sense of intensity as it opens with violence. It leaves the viewers eager to see what is taking place and how could the climax get more intense than this.
Within the same scene, there is a low angle close up shot. It shows a clear view of the antagonist of the movie (Thanos). The structure of the shot gives Thanos a menacing feel towards him, making him seem powerful. You can see his emotion of pride and commitment as he is not stopping until he gets what he wants, no matter the cost.
In another scene, there is another close up shot of Thanos. Here we can see him tearing up, seeming to be emotional. This is before he sacrifices his daughter's life, and it can be seen in his face what he feels. This shows that despite his actions, he still has "heart". This shot can make the viewers feel pity for him, despite all he has done. The slow violin music playing helps emphasize this emotion. This gives us the understanding that he will complete his mission, no matter the cost.
In another scene, there is a wide shot. Here, Thor, Groot, and Rocket enter the battle. This creates an excited emotion as it feels like this entrance will turn the tide in the fight, especially since right before they entered, the heroes were losing. The Avengers theme music further emphasizes this. The viewers are also eager to see Thor perform with his new weapon.
The last one is a high angle, over the shoulder shot. Thanos won and is wiping half the population. Here, our friendly neighborhood Spiderman starts to die in front of Iron Man. The angle shows how vulnerable he is as he fades away. The viewers were previously dazed and confused to see the villain win, and this shot adds to it. They now also feel sad and emotional to see one of their favorite heroes die in front of his mentor.
