Mise En Scene
Grey's Anatomy
Grey's Anatomy is a medical drama series. It focuses on a group of doctors at Seattle Grace Mercy West Hospital and their experiences. It mainly focuses towards Meredith Grey, the daughter of a famous surgeon, as she struggles to maintain relationships with her colleagues. The mise en scene throughout all the episodes are overall the same.
These two pictures represent the main mise en scene used throughout the episodes, both similar yet giving different tones. The location is at a (seemingly real) hospital, containing many hospital props and items so you can tell that it is a hospital instead of an apartment. The actors overall either wear civilian clothes, doctor outfits, or patient outfits (hospital gowns). The overall colors that are being shown is blue and white.
These mise en scene generally give an aspect of a real hospital, is if all events are actually happening. Those with the doctors uniform seem to be the main attention. With their costumes they seem as they are the problem solver. Those with the hospital gowns seem to be a victim, someone who is dependent to those wearing the doctor outfits. Those wearing civilian seem to be either the bystander of the event or the doctors whenever their shift is over. They seem to be the one out of place.
Both pictures give of two different meanings. In the first picture, blue is on their uniform and shows trustworthiness and reliance towards these doctors. It shows how they are here to save lives. The white color on the walls gives off simplicity of the scene. The lighting is normal, showing casual interaction and nothing crazy.
The second picture is seen differently. Here a man is shown to have red marks and a bandage on his head to show he is seriously injured or dying. The color of blue on the walls and on the civilian clothing is meant to show a sad mood. The dim lighting further emphasizes this, showing also that this is a serious moment. The color of white on the props and hospital gown shows coldness and maybe symbolism to heaven.
Overall, the mise en scene used is made to create either the mood saving or losing people. The use of the same mise en scene to create different meaning is partly why I like this show. The show seems very realistic and can really have you feel those positive or negative emotions they want you to feel.
